Surf rescues

Mar 12, 2021

Rescues in the surf are often very simple as the waves bring the swimmer and their equipment to the beach.   However there are times when the rescuer needs to step in to help the swimmer out.  We now have a series of lessons in our rescues course looking at lots of different rescue situations in the surf environment.  You have to be very careful when rescuing in the surf and sea kayaks when they are being pushed by waves can easily cause injury and or damage to other kayaks.  As a rule we always recommend approaching a rescue from the side so that you don't get taken on top of the swimmer by the wave or the swimmer and their kayak does not end up being surfed into you.  Rescuing in the surf is a great skill to practice so that you know you have the skills when it comes to a real situation.
