An Overview of the Sculling Family - With Cheri Perry

Sep 30, 2026

Sculling is a fundamental part of Greenland kayaking, giving you continuous support from the paddle and opening up a whole range of different manoeuvres and rolling techniques.

In this taster lesson from the Sculling Rolls and Manoeuvres section of our Kalaallit Greenland Rolling Course, Cheri gives you an overview of the four techniques covered in this part of the course and explains how they build on your understanding of the Greenland paddle.

The section of the course covers:

➡️ The layback scull
➡️ The chest scull
➡️ The on-deck sculling roll
➡️ The under-hull sculling roll

While these techniques are not necessarily a straightforward progression, each introduces a different challenge and develops your ability to use the paddle for continuous support.

Like all lessons in the course, we break each technique down into clear, manageable parts to help you understand what is happening with your body, boat and paddle.

You’ll find expert demonstrations, step-by-step progressions, land-based drills, underwater footage, drone shots and super slow-motion to help highlight the details that matter.

This introductory lesson gives you an overview of what’s coming, before we take a closer look at each of the individual sculling manoeuvres and rolls in the lessons that follow.
