Rescues in wind lessons

Mar 25, 2023

Earlier this year we managed to film the content for the rescues in wind lessons.  It was a section to the rescues course that had alluded us up to this point as we just hadn't managed to find the right environment at a time that we had set aside to meet up to film.  We this time we certainly found wind and perhaps a little too much!

When we filmed the boat handling in wind course we realised after the first day of filming that you need more wind that you would expect as the camera seems to remove some of the wind strength and it became hard to see the wind direction without the need to add arrows in post editing. For the boat handling in wind we ended up filming on 3 separate occasions to get the right shots.  For the rescues in wind we had learnt from this and waited for a forecast with some solid force 6-7 winds.  We actually got the force 7 with some gusts of 8 thrown into the mix.

With this sort of wind strength it was really clear to see how quickly a swimmer and kayak can become separated and how hard it is to move a swimmer. When we are filming the settings on the camera are all set up for video and it can be a challenge to switch between photos and video however, while James and Phil were out on the water working through the shot list for the course they decided to head back out at the end for a few photos.  Simon was behind the lens on this occasion and set the camera up with a fast shutter speed and captured some epic shots of James and Phil looking incredibly relaxed in what looks to be a quite lumpy environment.

The 600mm telephoto lens made the shots perhaps look more scary that it was as they were positioned a safe distance from the thundering waves behind them but it looks like they were in the thick of it.  We really hope you enjoy these new lessons as they were certainly hard work to capture!
