Kalaallit (Greenland) Rolling | Our New Online Course
Oct 06, 2025
We're excited to announce the launch of Online Sea Kayaking's Greenland Rolling course, designed for paddlers of all levels who want to explore the rhythm, flow, and techniques of traditional Greenland rolling.
We've teamed up with Cheri Perry to create a course that's not only informative but also visually stunning. Every lesson is designed to be immersive and easy to follow, with high-resolution 4K footage, drone shots, super slow-motion, and crystal-clear underwater angles.
What You'll Learn
When it's complete, this will be a massive course with over six hours of lessons. While we're still finalising the full edit, we didn't want to keep you waiting. So, we've released the sections we've already finished, meaning you can start learning right away. That's almost 3hours of lessons now live on OSK.
Here's a glimpse of what you can expect:
Foundations and History
We start with the basics, covering body mechanics, balance, and movement principles. You'll also learn a little about the history of Greenland rolling and get an overview of essential equipment you might need for this discipline, giving you a solid foundation before you hit the water.
Roll Families and Techniques
We begin with the front-to-back (layback) roll family, starting with the Standard Greenland Roll. It's a great place to start for new paddlers or as a reliable backup for experienced kayakers.
We break the roll down into a clear five-stage process:
Stage 1 – Land Drills: Practise on land to understand the movement and build muscle memory.
Stage 2 – Using the Avataq: Learn to recover onto the back deck with the support of this helpful training tool.
Stage 3 – Tuck and Open: Learn the body motion from the tuck, to opening up into your back float.
Stage 4 – Paddle Technique: Add the paddle to complete a full Standard Greenland Roll.
Stage 5 – Common Faults: Troubleshoot frequent challenges rollers face with Cheri's guidance.
Once you've mastered the basics, the course moves on to paddle-assisted variations, hand rolls using the Norsaq, and eventually the legendary straightjacket roll, including intermediate rolls like the elbow and prayer rolls.
Guidance and Support
We're here to help you every step of the way. You can leave questions in the comments section below each video, send us an email, or submit a video clip for personalised feedback. Our goal is to help you build confidence, balance, and control, all at your own pace.
